Chapter 3

Each question requires one paragraph. Each paragraph must contain 5 or more sentences. Do not cite the Internet, only cite from the textbook. You must cite the text at least once for each question in MLA style (see Announcements). Failure to follow these instructions will result in deduction of points. Remember that you will obtain a failing score for the entire DB post if you submit a blank or partial post first, for I consider it cheating. In other words, keep all answers on one post. Try your best to not summarize the textbook and instead offer your analysis.
Chapter 1
How is race a social construct? Why is race important in the US?
What does the term historical construction mean? Please explain and provide examples.

Chapter 2
What is the origin of intelligence testing? What were some of the consequences of the eugenics movement?

Chapter 3
What is the difference between old and new racism? What is the difference between biological and cultural racism?
Provide at least one example.

Chapter 4
What is the relationship between individual and institutional racism? What are systemic and structural racism, and how do they reproduce and justify racial disparities? Provide examples.

Chapter 5
What is an example of a stereotype that is used to justify racial inequality? Provide at least one example.

Chapter 6
What is the difference between colorism and skin color stratification? What are some indicators of skin-color stratification in the United States? Provide at least one example.

Chapter 7
How is white privilege related to gender and sexuality? What is cultural whitening? Provide at least one example.

This week’s reading was an in-depth look at the events that led to the TWLF student strikes at SF State College (began in fall 1968) and at UC Berkeley (winter 1969). Together, these student strikes lasted 5 months total–the longest student strike in American history.
This article was written by Harvey Dong, a student striker at UCB in 1969 and later became a professor of Ethnic and Asian American Studies at UCB.
As you think about the principles of relevant education, self-determination, and serving the community, answer these questions about this week’s reading:
Why do you think it was important for the Black Student Union, Asian American Political Alliance, Mexican American Student Confederation, and the Native American Student Union to come together as the Third World Liberation Front?
Why do you think the TWLF demanded its own, separate College of Third World Studies (later known as Ethnic Studies)?
