What are the descriptive indicators (dispositions, qualities, characteristics) that students use to define a “good teacher”?

It is not enough to simply believing that the quality of relationships matters in creating a classroom environment that supports student’s academic, emotional, and physical development. It is important to back up these beliefs with quantitative evidence.
The following information represents some of the key ideas expressed in the research. Read and reflect on each point (1-3).
Point #1 is a short summary taken from a large group of student interviews.
Points #2 and #3 include specific research articles that you will need to read,
1) Some studies on relationships have been done through an interview process in order to find out what students value in teachers. What are the descriptive indicators (dispositions, qualities, characteristics) that students use to define a “Good Teacher”? Although many of these studies were done with middle school and high school students, the similarity in findings would suggest widespread agreement that could be applied to all grade levels.
This is a summary of the findings across various studies,
Establishing caring relationships
Controlling the classroom, setting limits (expectations) with follow-through without being rigid, threatening or punitive
Making learning fun
Acting respectfully –
Taking time to get to get to know the students and their circumstances
Explaining the content clearly and providing extra support when needed, (being patient and taking extra steps if the students don’t get the material.)
2) The following excerpt is from the meta-analysis study by Marzano, Marzano, and Pickering. Pay particular attention to the end of the article that describes the dynamics of the optimal balance between teacher-student relationships
3) The following excerpt is from a research study published in 2007 in, Urban Education. This particular research study focused on the Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (CRCM) practices of 3 elementary teachers (one white, one African American, and one Asian) in a school of almost 100% African American students.
Although 3 teachers is not a large study and the focus is on working with African American students, I believe that the literature review, as well as the ultimate findings of this particular study, provide some important insights on effective practices for working with diverse students in your own classroom.

ASSIGNMENT:
Although each of the articles you read looked at the topic of teacher-student relationships through a slightly different lens, they all express some common themes.
After reading and reflecting on this research information, write a 3-4 page Reading Response about some of the KEY ideas that you have learned and want to practice in your teaching. What do YOU see as some of the key aspects of “optimal student-teacher” relationships that you want to cultivate and practice?
